Iran gas deal: Govt officials discuss measures to avoid US sanctions

ISLAMABAD- The government has decided to hold renewed talks over cost of Iran gas pipeline project and concession in gas tariff.
Federal Petroleum Minister would visit Iran in this regard.According to documents obtained by Dunya News Investigation Cell, an inter-ministerial session was held at Foreign Ministry on Saturday.
During meeting, Consultat Ahmer Bilal Soofi recommended to complete the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project through a private firm and a bilateral agreement is needed with Iran in this regard.

Attorney General suggested that US law firms assistance should be sought to prevent sanctions over the deal.

Foreign Secretary termed it a risky project. He suggested that US government must be taken into confidence over the project.

Washington has long been pushing Islamabad to abandon the multibillion dollar project and threatened to impose economic sanctions if it goes ahead with the plan.

But the government has handed over a non-paper to US Secretary of John Kerry that clearly suggests that the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has no plans to reverse the decision of the Pakistan Peoples Party government, which signed the historic deal with Iran.
