Islamabad standoff: Ch Nisiar says he ordred cops to hold fire

ISLAMABAD: Dispelling the impression that one armed man held the federal capital hostage, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Friday said that he was monitoring the situation minute-by-minute and had himself directly instructed the police not to open fire until ordered, Geo News reported.

"Taking an armed and dangerous Sikander out was not a big deal, but after confirming that he was neither a terrorist nor had he taken anyone hostage, I then issued the orders to hold fire as I did not want children to see their father getting shot", said Nisar while briefing the media about hours long armed standoff that brought Islamabad to a standstill Thursday.

Nisiar held himself and the media responsible for this drawn-out standoff.

"Had the media not been giving it so much focus, the standoff would not have lasted that long", said he.

He said that police had reached on an agreement with Sikandar to hold talks on his demands at a house in Islamabad when PPP leader Zamurad Khan showed up at the site the breaking security circle and tried to play hero.

Nisar said Zamaurd Khan's valor was commendable, but he eventually failed to overcome the armed man owing to the fact it was not his job, adding the mayhem that followed could have led to an even bigger disaster.

"No doubt Zamurad Khan had good intentions but his unsuccessful action failed police planning to arrest Sikandar without firing a single shot ensuring the safety of public and the culprit's family" he said.

He added that security personnel should not have allowed anyone to go close to the gunman, who was accompanied by his wife and children.

The interior minister further said that he had ordered the concerned authorities to suspend all those police officials who allowed Zamarud Khan to take such a foolhardy chance without consulting the government.

He said that hours long deadlock before police action against Sinkandar was part of planning and strategy to save lives of innocent people at site besides his arrest alive.

The minister said that Sikander did not breach the security circle of the Red Zone of federal capital adding that it was not difficult for police to shoot him at site but the better way was to catch him without violence in the presence of media and Sikandar's kids.

"We had decided to carry out an operation but it was difficult for police to disclose its security fundamentals owing to the live coverage of TV channels in presence of public that too in an open area", he said.

He further said that it was later revealed to him that police was not equipped with stun-guns and night-vision goggles, which also created hurdles to launch an early action against the gunman.

Nisar said that thoroughly checking every vehicle that was running on the streets of federal capital was next to impossible, adding, it would virtually paralyze the city.

He said that in the preliminary investigation, no criminal record was found against Sikandar however it was established that he was addict before 2013, adding that no evidence was found about his psychological disorders so far.

Addressing a press conference here at PML-N secretariat on Friday, he said that the inquiry report would be compiled within next 48 hours and it would be published for public up to some extent.

He said that keeping in view the Islamabad incident, government would review its security arrangements to improve the grey areas to avoid the happening of such incidents in future.

"The government will import and install the modern equipment for traffic control and security purpose from China, Turkey and other friend countries to improve the capability of law enforcement agencies" he maintained.

"Policemen deployed at the pickets/checkpoint, challenge only those motorists or individuals for checking/frisking who they find suspicious out of their experience", said he.
