CJ links Balochistan unrest to LB polls

QUETTA: The Supreme Court observed on Friday that the main cause of the deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan was the delay in holding of local body elections in the province.

He instructed the authorities concerned to submit a report about amendments to local body laws at the next hearing of the case. A two-member bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Azhar Saeed, while hearing the Balochistan unrest case, expressed annoyance over the absence of federal interior secretary from the court.

Chief Justice Chaudhry was not satisfied when informed by the additional attorney general about a delay in the secretary1s fight and said: Do you think that we (will) pass just a two-line order and go back and you will stay there? No-one should compel us to pass an order.

Chief Justice Chaudhry also referred to Thursday146s Islamabad incident which he said was watched by the entire nation for six hours.

What action has so far been taken by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) for six hours live transmission, the chief justice remarked, adding that the incident had exposed the entire security apparatus. He lauded the bravery shown by Zamurrad Khan.

Pemra chairman Abdul Rasheed informed the court that he had no powers to close down live transmission of any news channel.

On this, the Chief Justice said that it was a very sensitive matter and asked Pemra chairman to submit a written statement in the court that you have no power to ban such transmissions of private TV channels and then we will talk with authorities concerned.

MISSING PEOPLES CASE: Taking up the missing peoples case, the chief justice said that despite passage of two years he had not seen any progress in the case.

This was the reason we called the federal interior secretary to come to the court, take the list of missing people and ensure recovery of all of them.

The Supreme Court issued notices to former CCPO of Quetta, Abid Notkani, and Police Officer Shahid Nizam Durrani over non-recovery of two missing people.

Referring to the attack by militants on the Ziarat Residency of Quaid-i-Azam the chief justice said it was a very sensitive matter but no-one was paying attention to it.

During hearing of the suo motu case of police line suicide attack, Capital City Police officer Quetta Mir Zubair Mehmood informed the court that some important progress had been made in the case and culprits would soon be arrested.

Chief Justice Chaudhry asked the CCPO why dont they launch a search operation from Kuchlak to Mian Ghundi and on this the CCPO replied that with the cooperation of the FC we have launched a targeted operation and the prime minister and federal interior minister had been informed about it.

The provincial government has also given us the authority to take any action, anywhere, anytime, Mir Zubair Mehmood informed the Supreme Court.
