He expressed these views while addressing a joint press conference with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and the United Nations have agreed to further strengthen partnership in addressing regional and global issues.
The understanding came during a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in Islamabad today.
Later addressing a joint news conference along with the prime minister Ban Ki Moon said the United Nations will continue to support Pakistan in the war against terrorism and promotion of tolerance.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan has supported UN efforts for maintenance of international peace and security. Since 1960 we have been contributing troops to UN peacekeeping missions. He said we have always supported the purposes and principles of the UN charter.
Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan is working for peace and stability in the region. He said this is his earnest desire to ease tension with India start dialogue and address all outstanding issues including Jammu and Kashmir. He said Jammu and Kashmir is the long outstanding issue on the UN agenda and Pakistan seeks its just and peaceful resolution in accordance with the UN resolutions and aspirations of Kashmiri people. He hoped the world body will play its due role in resolving the dispute.
Nawaz Sharif said the escalation of tension at the Line of Control is a matter of grave concern for us and the Secretary General. He however said Pakistan will continue to exercise restraint and act with responsibility. He hoped India will also reciprocate to reduce the prevailing tension. We want to deescalate tension through diplomacy.
Highlighting Pakistan s efforts for bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan130 the Prime Minister said that Pakistan wants peaceful and stable Afghanistan and will extend all possible assistance for an Afghan led and owned peace process.
Ban Ki Moon said Pakistan is a vibrant and dynamic country full of promises and possibilities. Describing the recent general polls as a milestone in the country s history130 he said it is high time for both Pakistan and the UN to further deepen their relations in different spheres.
He said Pakistan is an important partner and promoter of peace and is the largest contributor to the UN peace keeping missions.
Expressing sympathies with the victims of floods Ban Ki Moon Pakistan is amongst the countries most vulnerable to climate change and natural calamities. He said the UN will work with Pakistan to better prepare it face the natural disasters.
Acknowledging Pakistan s sacrifices in the war against terrorism, the UN Secretary General said the world body will continue to extend full support to Pakistan in fighting this menace.
Welcoming Pakistan s progress in achieving millennium development goals Ban Ki Moon said it is important that Pakistani government further accelerate their efforts in this regard.
