PM for expediating flood relief activities

LAHORE: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif directed on Sunday the Punjab government to utilise all possible resources for accelerating relief activities in the flood-hit areas.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the measures being taken by the Punjab government for providing relief to flood affected people, during a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif.The Punjab chief minister briefed the Prime Minister regarding flood situation and relief activities in the province and informed the premier that all the available resources were being utilised for the rehabilitation of flood affected people.

Chief Minister said that provincial ministers and senior officers are present in the flood-hit areas for the supervision of relief activities.

He said that special camps have also been set up for the flood victims in the affected areas.

Punjab's worst flood-hit areas

Moreover, Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab Captain (R) Muhammad Asif has said that Narowal, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Gujrat districts were severely affected by floods in the province.

Talking to Radio Pakistan, DG Provincial Disaster Management Authority Captain (R) Asif said that some areas of Narowal and Sheikhupura were worst hit and water inundated all roads leading towards these areas.

He stated that PDMA Punjab provided boats and Rescue 1122 were busy to brought people to safe places.


Captain (R) Asif G said that south Punjab region was on high alert this weekend with water levels of the rivers Chenab and Ravi rising further.

He further said that warning has been issued to more than hundred and fifty villages besides Pakistan army has made arrangements for food stuff to be handed out to the flood stricken people.

Asif informed that more than hundred thousand people have been affected by the flood this month adding that people were being evacuated and moved to safe places.

He said that government was providing foods and medicines to flood camps as PDMA set distribution points of food and other goods at every district to provide assistance to flood affectees.

He added that rice crop were damaged completely. Five thousand acres of land have been submerged while many houses have collapsed as the flood water has entered homes.
The recent floods have also destroyed standing crops and mango orchard on an area of 3500 acres in Multan district, an official said.

DCO Gulzaar Hussain Shah informed that 25 boats were being used to evacuate the stranded people. He further informed that an other 70 boats would be hired to shifted people to safe places.

SP Karamat Malik informed that they had deputed one male and one female constable along with boats to offer security. Similarly, the people in possession of cattle were being registered to curb thefts.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The flood cell of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's irrigation department said on Monday that there was a low-level flooding in River Kabul at Warsak area of the province where the water flow was recorded at 31,070 cusecs whereas it was recorded at 54,700 cusecs at Nowshera.

Similarly a low level flood also occurred in River Panjkora near Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Dir district measuring 13,682 cusecs.

The low level flood was recorderd at 27,477 cusecs in Khiali tributary of the River Swat at Charsadda area The flow of River Swat was recorded at 10,710 cusecs near Khwaza Khela area.
