Brave Zamarud Khan of PPP emerges a hero

ISLAMABAD: In a rare show of bravery and heroism, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Zamarud Khan put his life at stake to ensure arrest of a heavily armed man on Jinnah Avenue here Thursday night.

Khan engaged the armed man, Malik Sikander, in negotiation and then pounced at him with an aim to overpower him but the latter managed to get out of his grip. Police and other law enforcers surrounding the site of crime opened fire, injuring the culprit who was trying to run across the road and making him fall on the ground. The law enforcers immediately rushed towards the lying man and took him into their custody in an injured condition.

This put an end to the armed standoff, which started in the evening in the capital city and continued for several hours till late Thursday night.

Speaking to Geo News, Zamarud Khan said he watched the situation as it unfolded on TV and could not take it anymore wondering how a single man could almost bring the entire capital city of Islamabad to a standstill.

Even if I had to sacrifice my life (for the country) it would have been a thing of honour for me, said Khan.

Malik Sikanders wife also sustained injuries in the action. However, the children remained unhurt.

Two policemen including DSP Arif Hussian suffered minor injuries by the shots fired by the perpetrator.

President Asif Ali Zardari, PPP patron-in-chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and other senior leaders Khursheed Shah, Faryal Talpur and Qamar Zaman Kaira congratulated Zamrud Khan for his courage.
