Elevation of ten high court judges proposed

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) in its meeting held here on Saturday proposed elevation of 10 judges, seven for the Sindh High Court and three for the Balochistan High Court, but dropped considering names for the Islamabad High Court.
Presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the meeting was held in the Supreme Courts premises. The last meeting of the JCP to consider the names of the judges for the Peshawar High Court and the Sindh High Court was held on May 25.
An informed source told Dawn that the commission considered five district and sessions judges 151 Shaukat Ali Memon, Mrs Ashraf Jan, Shahnawaz Tariq, Amir Faisal and Abdul Malik Guddi  and four lawyers  Nazar Akbar, Mohammad Junaid Ghuffar, Zafar Rajpoot and Ijaz Ahmad Sheikh 151 for the Sindh High Court. Later, the commission approved seven names for the SHC and dropped the names of Amir Faisal and Ijaz Ahmad Sheikh.

The commission also approved the names of Balochistan Advocate General Shakil Ahmad Baloch, Mohammad Ijaz and Mohammad Kamran for elevation as judges of the Balochistan High Court, but it dropped the names of Islamabad Bar Associations former president Haroonur Rasheed, Anees Jilani and Raja Ishtiaq for appointment as IHC judges.

During the proceedings, the representatives of superior courts bars requested the commission to consider lawyers proposed amendments in the JCP Rules 2010 which the meeting said would be taken up in a special meeting to be summoned soon.

After the meeting, Pakistan Bar Council vice chairman Qalbe Hassan told Dawn that the Balochistan High Court Bar Association intends to observe a strike on Monday against the decision of the commission for approving names of judges for the Balochistan High Court.

We are truly disappointed over ignoring the suggestions given by representatives of the bar during the JCP meeting which have opposed these elevations against the back drop of resolutions passed by the provincial high court bar members in Quetta, Mr Hassan said.
