UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan and Afghanistan are in contact with each other to forge better relations vitally needed to reduce Taliban's role in both countries as also the deadly violence of the militant group, a top UN official said on Thursday.
We hope very much that relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan will improve, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson told a news conference at UN Headquarters in New York.
There is hope that there could be a new start with the new government of (Prime Minister) Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan, he added.
Responding to questions on his return from a five-day visit to Afghanistan, Eliasson said that contacts were taking place between the two neighbours.
There have been invitations in both directions. They have not agreed on the sequence of visits. But there is a dialogue on several levels, and I would very much hope that one would have an open and very, very honest discussion about future interests here.
It is an absolutely strategic relationship with great significance for the security of both countries, he said.
Political logic tells me that Pakistan and Afghanistan should have coinciding interests in reducing the role of the Taliban in both countries and reducing the level of violence, which we have seen so drastically and so tragically, both in Pakistan and in Afghanistan, said the UN deputy secretary general.
